We’re thrilled to have Ryun Yu, who originated the role of Gordon Hirabayashi back in 2007 in our critically acclaimed East West Players world premiere, back on the boards in HOLD THESE TRUTHS.  Ryun, who will soon star as the character of David Henry Hwang  in YOMYOMF’s adaptation of YELLOWFACE, who has been insanely busy writing, directing, producing and starring in his own indie film THE LAST TOUR, and who just welcomed his first daughter Miyako into the world a few months ago, will be playing Gordon in a May 19th benefit for the Japanese American Bar Association held at the Tateuchi Democracy Forum, helmed by Jessica Kubzansky, who directed our EWP premiere.  A very special guest at the aftershow panel will be Gordon’s nephew, Lane Hirabayashi, who along with his late father James, just published a new biography of Gordon called A PRINCIPLED STAND, and who will be on hand to speak of his Uncle Gordon and the research he and James did to write this fascinating new book, now available for purchase.

Ryun also just did a staged reading of HOLD THESE TRUTHS for the California Judges Association’s annual conference in Palm Springs, and in our audience was an amazing man:  Albie Sachs, a former Constitutional Court judge  appointed by Nelson Mandela when Mandela was elected President of South Africa and faced the enormous task of uniting a country torn apart by apartheid.  Sachs, in his early days as an anti-apartheid freedom fighter, lost his right arm and the vision in his right eye due to a bomb exploding in his car, planted by pro-apartheid terrorists.  Remarkably, he went on to recover with grace and determination, and among many other accomplishments, authored the landmark majority opinion of the Court which legalized gay marriage in South Africa.

Needless to say, for Ryun and me, meeting Albie Sachs was an unforgettable experience.  One of the great gifts of  HOLD THESE TRUTHS is that it continues to bring people like Judge Sachs into our lives who remind us why we”re doing what we’re doing, and who inspire us for a lifetime.  We are humbled and grateful that they, in turn, are inspired by the legacy of Gordon Hirabayashi.

I am somewhat aware of what was, and is.
I have a glimpse of what ought to be.
I seek to live as though the ought to be, is.

Gordon Hirabayashi
